There have been major changes done by the Houston Astros to multiple positions, as the team heads towards the regular season. One such change is transitioning Jose Altuve to left field. Altuve recently spoke about the change in the position and opened up about the challenges he expects to face, including a sense of loneliness.
Jose Altuve shares challenges behind playing at left field
Jose Altuve will be playing in the outfield, after having been positioned at second base for a good length of his career. The Houston Astros' decision to change Altuve's position can turn out to be an uncomfortable situation for the second baseman.
On Sunday, Jose Altuve was interviewed by MLB Network, during which he talked about his change in the position and how it's going to be pretty challenging for him. Altuve highlighted feeling a sense of loneliness on the left side, considering there will be no player to interact with.
"I think the biggest challenge is gonna be not talking to anyone you know. On second base, I'm talking to Jeremy Pena and talking to the first baseman, whoever's there that day," Altuve said.
"I'm even talking to the umpires, if someone gets a base, I'm talking to them. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna get some interaction with the fans, we'll see how that goes," Altuve further added.
Moving forward in his statement, Jose Altuve expressed having minimal work at his new position but would be looking forward to making the best out of it in the upcoming games. Talking about his plans for the new season, Altuve concluded his take, saying:
“I feel like I’m going to be able to do it. I want to get some action in the games that will tell me where I am. Just keep working and we can improve.”Jose Altuve has been playing with the Houston Astros since the team drafted him in the league in 2007. The second baseman made his MLB debut in 2011 and has helped the team win the World Series Championship twice, in 2017 and 2022. Last season, Altuve had a batting average of .306 and made a total of 2232 hits.
