Mika Singh: Controversies seem to follow me

Mika Singh has sure made a space of his own in Bollywood with his signature style singing and an attitude of a rockstar. The singer is currently busy with his stint on television with the music reality show 'The Voice', India.
Excerpts from a chat: Being a singer, it must be a different experience working in front of the camera?
Working in front of a camera is a different experience.I worked in a film (Balwinder Singh Famous Ho Gaya), and it was a memorable project. I’ve worked with well-known Bollywood stars like Anupam Kher, Rajpal Yadav and my dear brother Shaan. I really enjoyed the experience and learnt a lot about both acting and filmmaking.

What is more difficult, singing or acting?
As a matter of fact, I don’t find either really difficult. But as singing is my forte, it’s come to me real easy.While many singers have tried acting, not many have succeeded. You think acting is not for singers? There have been instances where singers have been great actors. And I have observed a number of singers from this generation are showing potential for acting. I feel that it’s really about putting your best effort in everything.

You somehow attract controversies. Why is that?
I have always asserted that controversies follow me rather than me landing up in them. But they have never fazed or bothered me at all. I will just continue to focus on pleasing my fans by singing their favorite songs!
With a lot happening on the music front, you think it is now possible to do something different and create a new sound?
I believe innovation is the key to evolving as an artist. I am always making new music and exploring new genres. I sing in various languages and have continued to diversify my style. In The Voice India, I am actively involved with the contestants to work on the rawness of their voice and help them explore different styles.

You started off with indie pop. And now things are very different in that area of music. You think indie pop can be revived?
All genres have their time. But indie pop is still very much around. It’s just that new styles of music are being experimented with, which is a good thing. It only adds variety to the music scene.
