Indian television is no longer limiting its family dramas to kitchen politics; the makers have now started infusing paranormal elements in family dramas and comedies to give a boost to the TRPs (Television Rating Points). Producer Rashmi Sharma observes, “Such tracks are weaved into the story in an organic manner. Exploring new genres is creatively satisfying and challenging.
We don’t introduce these elements because there is a dearth of tracks, but to offer something new to the viewers. Stakes are high while exploring these unconventional genres, but one has to take a risk.”
Here’s a look at the shows exploring the supernatural in it:
Uttaran The show’s ongoing track has Meethi being possessed by a spirit after Nandini performs black magic on her.
Adaalat One would expect a courtroom drama to deal with real people and crimes, but even the makers of this show couldn’t resist the temptation of exploring the supernatural genre. A recent episode featured an age-old Shiv temple, which has imposed a ban on the Ayaachi community from entering it. KD (Ronit Roy) does manage to unravel the real story behind the mystery, eventually.
Sasural Simar Ka After the usual kitchen politics involving scheming and copious tears, the family drama has now veered towards the supernatural. It began with Aditi (Neetha Shetty) possessing Simar (Dipika Samson). The makers are planning another track where Sara Khan, who entered as the new Roli after Avika Gor’s accident on the show, will apparently be revealed to be an icchadhari nagin (snakewoman).
FIR What happens when you infuse horror in comedy? That’s exactly what happened recently on FIR, when Chandramukhi Chautala (Kavita Kaushik) encountered a ghost. Strange incidents take place at Imaan Chowki as it becomes a centre of paranormal activities.

CID The show aired a series of episodes on haunted incidents — featuring a headless biker, a haunted house and a haunted boat, recently. The team of cops were put on a mission to unravel the truth behind these mysteries.

Fanaah Centred on the complicated love story between supernatural beings like vampires and werewolves, the story in the first season was based on a moonstone. If any werewolf, witch or vampire got hold of the mystical stone, it bestowed him or her with immortality. The show in its second season features characters like the joker, a bad scientist, Bloody Mary ghost etc, among its supernatural villains.
Hamari Sister Didi Amrita (Pariva Pranati) is often seen constantly conversing with her husband, Dr Avinash Kapoor (Hiten Tejwani), who’s dead. He inspires her to move on in life. The storyline of the show is loosely inspired by Demi Moore-starrer Hollywood film Ghost.
