Woman helps in Nigerian drug peddler’s arrest

Navi Mumbai: A 35-year-old woman residing in Ulwe helped the Nhava Sheva police apprehend a Nigerian woman drug peddler who was in possession of narcotics worth Rs 48 lakh.

Anjum Bagwan, senior inspector of Nhava Sheva, said that on Friday night, Shamshad Begum returned home in an Uber autorickshaw. As she alighted, a Nigerian woman sat in the auto. On reaching home, Begum realised she had left her purse in the auto. She contacted the autorickshaw driver. Later, the auto returned to the same spot and Begum asked the Nigerian woman, Alisha Kem (25), if she found her purse, but she denied it.

Begum, however, suspected she was lying and an argument ensued between them. Kem then ran from the spot and herself inside a shop’s toilet. Inspector Bagwan said police reached the spot, and lady constables found 18 capsules of cocaine and mephedrone drugs worth Rs 48 lakh in the Nigerian woman’s purse. — George Mendonca
