In the animal kingdom, predators are constantly evolving and refining their hunting techniques to outsmart their prey. From masterful camouflage to sophisticated traps and deceptive lures, these crafty predators exhibit remarkable ingenuity in securing their next meal. Cunning ways of animals hunting prey
Trapdoor spiders excel in ambush hunting by constructing hidden underground burrows. They frequently build silk-lined flexible doors over their tunnels and hidden entrances to conceal themselves. These spiders calmly wait with the door slightly open, detecting vibrations from passing insects. When the moment occurs, they quickly emerge to grasp their prey using their front legs and pedipalps.
Humpback whales use a sophisticated hunting tactic called bubble-net feeding. These whales swim in a coordinated fashion, forming a circular "net" of bubbles surrounding schools of fish. This bubble net captures the fish, driving them to the top for a successful feeding frenzy. This strategy, learnt and transmitted throughout whale pods, differs slightly across populations.
Azteca brevis ants in tropical Central America use extraordinary collaboration in their predatory methods. They build carton nests along plant stems, with worker ants positioned beneath perforations. As unwary insects go through these stems, the ants use their mandibles to paralyse and dismember their victim before devouring it.
The bolas spider uses a novel hunting technique, weaving a sticky silk lasso. The spider attracts male moths by mimicking the pheromones of females. It then hurls the sticky silk string, entangling the moth's wings in mid-flight. The spider's particular hunting mechanism allows it to capture victims with accuracy.
- Fishing lines and glowing butts
Glow worms, the larvae of fungus gnats, make intricate bioluminescent fishing lines in New Zealand's dark caverns. To attract small flying insects, these larvae exude mucus strands that shine blue-green. The glow worms utilise sticky lines to catch their food, which is then hauled in and eaten.
The spider-tailed horned viper, which lives in western Asia, uses aggressive mimicry to catch prey. Its tail, which resembles a spider with bulb-like protrusions, attracts lizards, rodents, and birds. When the prey is tricked by the tail's appearance, the viper strikes with precision.
Margay cats, which are native to Central and South America, use vocal imitation to attract prey. Margays attract adult tamarins by generating screams that sound like pied tamarin monkey newborns' distress calls. When the grownups arrive to save the "baby," the margay seizes the opportunity for an attack.
Green herons demonstrate tool use by dropping various objects such as bread crumbs and insects into the water to attract fish. This method lures the fish within striking distance, allowing the heron to capture them with its sharp beak.

Alligator snapping turtles utilise a unique hunting technique by camouflaging themselves with their environment. They keep their mouths wide open and use a worm-like tongue lure to attract fish. When fish swim close enough, they are swiftly captured by the turtle's powerful bite.
In order to catch ants and other tiny insects, antlion larvae dig sand pits in the shape of funnels in loose soil. If their victim tries to escape, they utilise sand to drag them back down, and they bury themselves at the bottom of the hole. While some species of antlions are familiar with this tactic, others adopt other ambush strategies.
