Groundwater table along Hyderabad’s western corridor plunges into red

Hyderabad: Absence of rains in May has led to a sharp decline in groundwater levels across Hyderabad, raising fresh concerns over the city’s water security ahead of the monsoon.
Data from groundwater monitoring stations show a steep fall in water tables in several parts of the city. In Quthbullapur, for instance, groundwater levels dropped from 102 feet below ground level in April to 122 feet in May. Same is the case with Serilingampally, Kukatpally, Patancheru and other parts where groundwater levels have plunged further.
The situation is particularly alarming in the western corridor of Hyderabad. The latest official groundwater map indicates that almost the entire western region has turned red, signifying critically depleted groundwater levels and heightened water stress.
Experts warn that the continued depletion of groundwater could pose serious challenges if adequate monsoon rains fail to materialize. The concern is compounded by weather forecasts suggesting that Hyderabad may receive normal to below-normal rainfall during the current monsoon season.
