Kanpur: A stir erupted in Kanpur Dehat on Wednesday after a mortar was discovered in a pond.
As soon as information about the issue came in, police and the district administration officers arrived at the location. Keeping security in mind, the whole area has been cordoned off, and the bomb squad along with the FSL team have been summoned to examine the matter. This case is from Jaswapur village under the Gajner police station limits. Residents noticed a mortar in the pond and immediately alerted the police.
After getting the information, the police reached the site and, as a safety measure, placed the area under a security cordon. When word of the incident spread, many villagers gathered there.

Deputy SP Sanjay Singh, who arrived on the spot, stated that the recovered item appears at first glance to be a mortar, which is a kind of explosive military device.

He added that expert views are being taken to confirm the object’s exact identity and its condition. For this purpose, a Forensic Science Lab (FSL) team is carrying out an investigation. Given the seriousness of the situation, a bomb squad team has also been called in from Jhansi.

Only after the experts complete their checks will it be known whether the object is active or inactive and how it ended up here.

Police have also requested the villagers not to go near the suspicious item until the enquiry is finished and to follow all safety directions. The administration has stepped up monitoring in nearby areas.

The officials said that definite details about the object’s nature and its origin will become clear only after the investigation report is received. For now, the police, FSL, and bomb squad teams are engaged in looking into the entire matter.
