MUMBAI: A day after a pet Rottweiler attacked a 39-year-old writer during a morning jog on Carter Road in Bandra (West), leaving him seriously injured, the dog's owner said he was seeking answers about the circumstances that led to the attack. The victim, Fahad Parihar of Santacruz (West), underwent surgery to his private parts and is recuperating in hospital.
The owner, Yogesh Talekar, claimed the dog had been taken away from its usual walking route near the Kalina Military Campus in Vakola and that he had specifically instructed the handler not to remove the animal's muzzle during its one-hour walk.
"Whatever happened is not right. Despite being unwell, I rushed to the hospital soon after I got call from the Khar police and spoke with Parihar's uncle who informed that he is undergoing surgery. I assured to help but was unable to meet the total medical bill expenses for the treatment which they told will be Rs5 lakhs. I am trying to overcome from the financial problem I am going through after my wife's death in August 2025 and spend around Rs22 lakhs for her treatment," Talekar told TOI.
Talekar, the son of a retired police officer, said the dog is his last connection to his wife, who bought it because they did not have a child in 12 years of marriage. "Initially, I kept the three-year-old canine at a pet care centre as old memories of my wife use to come knocking me. We had been planning to relocate to our village in Konkan along with the dog (who we treat as our kid). In November 2025, the care centre asked me to take my dog back as they are closing the centre. I was looking for someone who can adopt the canine. Then I dropped the plan and hired a person, Sahil Walekar, to handle the canine. I had instructed to take the dog to Kalina Military locality and never to remove the mouth muzzle. But on that day, Walekar he took the dog to Carter Road despite my instruction not to change the route," said Talekar.
In his FIR complaint, Parihar stated: "I was jogging on Carter Road in the promenade area from Carter Road, Khad Galli to Waters Club. When I came in front of Javafill Cafe on Carter Road, I saw a person sitting on a bench with his Rottweiler dog, whose muzzle was removed. Suddenly, the dog rushed towards me and knocked me down. At that time, the Rottweiler dog bit my private parts forcefully and started injuring me. The person on the bench started trying to control the dog. I asked the person to call my wife. The person shared his name and his employer's name and left the spot." Parihar’s wife later took him to Holy Family Hospital, where doctors carried out surgery as part of his treatment.
The Khar police have since called Talekar and the handler, and both have been booked under BNS sections. They were served notices before being permitted to leave. "After the incident, Walekar returned home and left the dog and waited for my return but did not inform anything. Few hours later, he called me and informed that the cops are calling me as my dog has attacked a jogger. I have sacked Walekar from job but what has happened is totally wrong," Talekar said.
