China has filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) against the European Union’s provisional tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles (EVs). The EU’s new tariffs range from 17.4% to 37.6%, adding to an existing 10% duty on Chinese auto imports. This action follows the EU’s finding that Chinese automakers benefit from government subsidies, giving them an unfair advantage over European competitors.

The tariffs escalate global trade tensions over protectionist policies related to EVs, with the US and EU also accusing China of unfairly supporting its EV market. China’s Ministry of Commerce argues that the tariffs violate WTO rules and hinder global efforts to combat climate change.

China’s complaint, filed on Friday, asserts that the EU’s measures are unjustified and detrimental to international cooperation on climate issues. The EU’s provisional tariffs were introduced in July after an investigation revealed that subsidies to Chinese battery electric vehicle (BEV) makers pose an economic threat to EU producers.

China has called on the EU to revise its actions and work together to maintain stability in China-EU economic relations and the EV supply chain.
