F1 2022: Verstappen wins the Hungarian GP as Ferrari's strategy blunders continue
Round 13 of the 2022 season took place at the 4.381 km long Hungaroring racetrack in Hungary - the final race before the traditional summer break. Ferrari's poor strategy calls again led them to jeopardize the Hungarian Grand Prix, with Red Bull benefitting the most.
George Russell started the race on pole and led the early stages of the race, until Leclerc managed to overtake him on Lap 31.
However, it was the current Championship leader Max Verstappen who managed to take the win at the end, even after having starting the race from P10. Mercedes teammates Lewis Hamilton and George Russell took the final two podium positions.
Both Scuderia Ferrari drivers Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc had a disappointing race, finishing P4 and P6 respectively. The two were separated by Sergio Perez on fifth, who had started the GP at 11th. Take a look at all the point scorers at the 2022 Hungarian Grand Prix -
1. Max Verstappen (Red Bull)
2. Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) +7.834
3. George Russell (Mercedes) +4.503s
4. Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) +2.242s
5. Sergio Perez (Red Bull) +1.109s
6. Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) +0.359s
7. Lando Norris (McLaren) +62.253s
8. Fernando Alonso (Alpine) +1L
9. Esetban Ocon (Alpine) +1L
10. Sebastian Vettel (Aston Martin) +1L
In the end, it was Ferrari that suffered again because of poor strategies, putting Charles Leclerc on hard tyres and then pitting him for softs. Lando Norris, Fernando Alonso, Esteban Ocon, and Sebastian Vettel were the final three point scorers.
Max Verstappen now leads the 2022 Driver's Championship with 258 points, while Charles Leclerc sits on second with 178 points. Sergio Perez is on third, just five points behind Leclerc. Red Bull goes into the summer break leading the Constructor's table with 431 points.
