PUNE: Bajaj Auto on Thursday unveiled the electric Chetak in Pune. This marks Bajaj Auto's foray into the electric vehicle segment and its re-entry into the scooter segment well after a decade.
"The Chetak was unveiled in the capital on October 16, 2019. To commemorate the event, the Chetak Electric Yatra was flagged off by Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways.
Riders on 20 Chetaks have travelled more than 3000 kms through North and Western India to finally reach Pune. It has already travelled from Delhi to Agra, Jaipur, Udaipur, the Chetak Samarak in Chittorgarh, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Panaji before reaching Pune on November 14, 2019," the company said in a statement.
Rajiv Bajaj, managing director, Bajaj Auto later told mediapersons that the vehicle will be ready to sell in January 2020 and will be priced in the Rs 1 to 1.5 lakh range.
The company said that the batteries are built to last for about 70,000 Kms -- almost a lifespan of 6-7 years in an average two-wheeler riders life.
Bajaj said he is confident that the market for its electric two-wheelers will find appeal among the youth and old alike due to the emotional appeal the old Chetak scooters had with people in the 1990s.
