MUMBAI: Hindustan Unilever has appointed Kalpana Morparia, CEO of JP Morgan India, on its board effective October 9, 2014. This makes Morparia, who is also a member of the JP Morgan Asia Pacific management committee, the first woman director on the board of HUL.
The move brings HUL in compliance with the new Sebi rules that require publicly listed companies to have one woman board director.
Sebi had recently extended the deadline by six months for companies to meet the requirement.
As an independent director, Morparia will be a member of the audit and corporate social responsibility committees of the HUL board, a company statement said.
Morparia is an independent director on the boards of several companies, including Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, Bennett Coleman & Company, Phillip Morris International and CMC. Prior to joining JP Morgan India, Morparia served as vice chair on the boards of ICICI Group companies. She was the joint managing director of the ICICI Group from 2001 to 2007.
