Savings Bank Account Makes You Poor, Here's How

Savings Bank Account Makes You Poor, Here's How

A minimum balance requirement or monthly maintenance fees are common for savings accounts. If your savings account doesn't maintain the required balance, the bank will take money out of it in the form of fees, which will offset any interest you would have otherwise received.

2/10

Low Interest Rates

In comparison to other accounts or investments, including money market accounts or certificate of deposits (CD), interest rates are lower.

3/10

Federal Withdrawal Limits

Regulation D imposes federal withdrawal restrictions on savings accounts, which are limited to six times a month. If you take out more money than what the federal limits allow, the banks will charge you a fee, and if you keep doing so more than six times each month, they may switch your account from a savings account to a checking account.

4/10

Access and Availability

Yes, we are aware that this is an advantage as well, but if you discover that having access to these assets is too tempting, it may be challenging to save money for the long term.

5/10

Rates can Change

Interest rates on savings accounts are flexible, which means that financial institutions are permitted to set and alter interest rates as they see fit. The rates on high-interest savings accounts will generally follow changes in the federal rate.

6/10

Inflation

If the interest rate on your savings account isn't competitive, inflation may be eating away at the value of the money you've earned, leaving you with a balance that will be worth less in a year's time than it does now.

7/10

Compounded Interest

The majority of conventional banks and credit unions compound the interest earned on savings accounts either monthly or yearly. This implies that, especially when compared to other investment alternatives, the full potential of your money isn't always realised.

8/10

Fees

Some financial organisations charge fees on savings accounts, which can take money away from your gains. For instance, if your balance falls below the minimum balance required for the account, a monthly fee might be assessed.

9/10

No Tax Benefits

The interest you earn from your savings account is taxable in the year it’s paid.

10/10

Access and Availability

Restrictions on savings accounts are frequently present, including minimum balance or deposit requirements, withdrawal caps, and a variety of restricted deposit or withdrawal methods.
