CM expresses concern over rising crimes against women in Tripura
CM Manik Saha said growing incidences of crime against women have got nothing to do with politics or any party
AGARTALA: Incidents of rape and atrocities on women and political violence in the past few months in Tripura have overtaken crimes such as narcotics and drugs smuggling, barely three months ahead of assembly elections.
The opposition parties have accused Tripura police of working for BJP cadres.
According to police, Tripura has registered as many as 300 cases of crime in one month and among them 14 are of rape.

As many as 23 people have been booked so far in rape cases but a few others are still absconding. The police denied the allegations and claimed, “In most of the cases, criminals have not been identified and evidence of crimes was not found, which delayed the investigation in some cases.”
Chief minister Manik Saha expressed serious concern over the growing incidences of crime against women and opined, “This has got nothing to do with politics or any party. They are criminals in the eyes of law and society as well. Therefore, only legal action would not be sufficient to tackle such types of crime unless society becomes sensitive towards women, and parents educate their children.”
He said rape, molestation and other atrocities on women have been a reason for worry for the past many years but in terms of figures, it is less than the previous communist dispensation.
Veteran psychiatrist Dr A K Nath said, “The social structure has changed drastically and families have become nuclear. Entertainment is easily available on cellphones and girls are falling prey to cybercrimes. The abuse of drugs, narcotics and atrocities on women have gone up manifold.”

“Not only the police, the government department and even families can put up a fight. While the government can help raise the conviction rate, gender sensitisation should be included in the curriculum and families must take the lead to educate boys on how to behave with girls,” Nath said.
Tripura Women’s Commission chairperson Barnali Goswami said, “They have visited the victims and recorded their statements, and police were advised to speed up the investigation of each and every case.”
