AGRA: Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with an UK-based NGO, Healing Little Hearts (HLH) for conducting complex congenital cardiac surgeries in the University's Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC).

“The MoU will facilitate free heart surgeries to babies and children that need it the most,” said Prof

Mohammad Hanif Beg

, Chairperson, Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery in JNMC.

Prof Javaid Akhter (Registrar), Prof Mohammad Hanif Beg (Chairperson, Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery) and Dr Azam Haseem signed the MoU with HLH's Dr

Sanjiv Nichani

(Consultant Paediatric Interventionist, UK) and Dr Shamshul Zoha.

"Since independent researches show yearly births of over 1,00,000 babies with congenital heart defects in India, it was high time to take necessary steps for helping these children with heart ailments," said Prof Beg pointing out that many children requiring corrective heart surgeries do not get treated due to financial constraints and even the quality of the affordable treatment that is available is sub-standard with poor expertise.

He further said that JNMC provides affordable treatment with state-of-art facilities to patients from under privileged sections.

Earlier in April, Healing Little Hearts UK team headed by Dr

Mohammad Nassar

, UK based Pediatric Cardiac surgeon Prof Beg and Dr M Azam Haseen successfully operated children with complex cardiac defects and vascular abnormalities at the JNMC in which Dr Shamim Gauhar, Dr Alan Mcheyne, Dr

Nadeem Raza

and Dr Munazir Athar provided anaesthesia.
