Overnight spell of pre-monsoon showers helps reduce June rainfall deficit in parts of Marathwada
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Parts of Marathwada received overnight pre-monsoon rainfall on Sunday, bringing relief from hot and humid conditions and significantly reducing rainfall deficit in the region.
According to official data, Dharashiv received 31mm of rainfall followed by Latur (14mm) and Beed (9mm). However, several other areas in the region, including Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, experienced only light showers accompanied by gusty winds, the data showed.
The rainfall spell pushed up rainfall quantum in Dharashiv to a surplus of 196% for June so far. Latur and Beed too have registered surpluses of 115% and 112%, respectively, after the overnight rain spell. In contrast, the remaining five districts continue to face rainfall deficit for the month so far, with Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Jalna emerging as the worst affected, each recording a 64% shortfall, followed by Hingoli (-51%), Parbhani (-34%), and Nanded (-21%), according to the data.
KK Dakhore, an agricultural meteorologist at the Vasantrao Naik Marathwada Agricultural University in Parbhani, said the southwest monsoon had advanced up to Solapur. “It is difficult to predict the exact arrival of the monsoon in Marathwada, as weather systems remain dynamic. Parts of the region are, however, likely to receive significant rainfall from June 12 due to expected pre-monsoon activity,” he said.
India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast showed that Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and nearby areas were likely to experience partly cloudy skies with occasional spells of rain or thundershowers.
Meanwhile, the maximum temperature in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar stood at 39.4°C, two degrees above normal, highlighting the continued wait for sustained rainfall to bring down temperatures.
