Pilibhit: In an effort to curb roadside littering, the Pilibhit municipal council on Tuesday launched a drive to distribute 2,000 dustbins with a 60-litre capacity among fruit, vegetable, chaat, pan masala and tobacco vendors across the city.
The council has also installed six large litter trolleys at locations where street vendors generate waste in large quantities. Municipal chairperson Dr Astha Agarwal said vendors would face penalties if waste from their establishments was found dumped in drains or scattered on roads.
She noted that vendors often discarded onion peels, corn husks and rotten produce in public places, while disposable plates, glasses and empty pan masala sachets added to the mess. Vendors have been instructed to ensure that customers use the dustbins provided.
Municipal staff will regularly clear the trolleys and transport the waste to the dumping yard. The distribution drive is expected to be completed within two days.
“The initiative aims to promote cleanliness and encourage citizens to dispose of waste responsibly,” Agarwal said.
