Politician gets obscene video call, goes to police

Bhopal: A woman politician has filed a complaint with Bhopal Police that she was the victim of an online sextortion attempt on Sunday night. She received a WhatsApp message from an unknown mobile number and then a video call in which an unidentified woman suddenly started disrobing.
The politician disconnected the call but the accused had snapped a photograph on the nude video call and sent it to her from another number, along with a threat to share it on social media.The accused made repeated threat calls to the politician.
Acting on the politician’s complaint, TT Nagar police registered a case of molestation and criminal intimidation, DCP (zone-1) Sai Krishna S Thota said, adding that the case is being transferred to the cybercrime branch.
According to the complaint, someone sent a WhatsApp message to the politician around 7pm, saying she wanted to talk to her. The politician asked the sender for her full introduction. A few minutes later, she received a WhatsApp video call from the same number, and as soon as the politician answered it, the caller started disrobing herself, says the complaint. The politician immediately disconnected and blocked the number.
A little later, the politician received a video over WhatsApp from another unidentified mobile number, along with screenshots of the obscene video call and threat messages. Calls from the number kept coming till 11.30pm, but she did not receive any of them, says the complaint. In the morning, she went to police. Cyber cell will take up the probe.
