Kaithal/PATIALA: A bus carrying students of a computer training institute from Barnala district in Punjab fell from a bridge into the dry bed of Ghaggar river on Tuesday evening near Tatiana village of Kaithala district, leaving a girl dead and more than 50 injured. The deceased has been identified as Sandeep Kaur.
The students were going to Rohtak to attend a seminar.
The mishap took place at around 7 pm. The toll could have been higher had the river not been dry, sources said.
Labourers working at a nearby construction site rushed to the spot to rescue the passengers. Eyewitnesses said employees and labourers at the construction site took a JCB machine to the mishap spot to pull out the bus, besides taking out the injured. The injured were rushed to government hospital in Guhla town of Kaithal.
"Around 65-70 students were travelling in the bus when the incident took place around 7 in the evening. The riverbed was dry. Some travelers told us that all of them were students of an institute in Patiala and were going to Rohtak to participate in some event," said
Nishan Singh of Dharmerhi village, who was among the rescuers.
