PATIALA: The three-day Gurmat Sangeet Utsav organised by the Department of Gurmat Sangeet, Punjabi University in collaboration with SGPC Sri Amritsar Sahib started here today in the Kala Bhawan of the University.
Jathedar Avtar Singh Makkar, President SGPC. inaugurated this Utsav. Dr. Jaspal Singh, Vice-Chancellor, Punjabi University, presided over the function.
On this occasion Sarwan Singh Phillaur, Cabinet Minister, Punjab was the Chief Guest and Dr. Gurmohan Singh Walia, Vice-Chancellor, Sri Guru Granth Sahib World Sikh University, Fatehgarh Sahib participated as a Special Guest in this function.
In his inaugural address Jathedar Avtar Singh while appreciating the efforts of Punjabi University for propagation and preservation of Gurmat Sangeet, said that SGPC is making whole-hearted efforts for the propagation of Sikh musical traditions. He informed that SGPC was in the process of preparing translation of Sri Guru Granth Sahib in other languages.
University honoured Jathedar Avtar Singh with the First Bebe Nanaki Gurmat Sangeet Award established by the Punjabi University. While speaking on this occasion S. Sarwan Singh Phillaur, Cabinet Minister, Punjab emphasised that Punjab Government was committed towards its policy of preservation of rich culture of Punjab and as such Government was in the process of making advanced policy for this purpose. He also announced grant of Rs. two lacs for the Gurmat Sangeet department.
Earlier while welcoming the guests Dr. Gurnam Singh, HoD gave detailed information about the projects being undertaken by the Gurmat Sangeet department. He also informed that two students from US . have been enrolled in Ph.D. with full bright scholarship.
