Slug: High-voltage protest
Batala: A father and son from Sairowal village, under the jurisdiction of Ghuman police station, climbed a high-tension electricity tower on Thursday. The duo alleged police inaction regarding their family's grievances and sought redress in a long-pending legal case. Reportedly, Hardev Singh, also known as Heera Singh, and his son, Harman Singh, took the extreme step after the father claimed that police were allegedly harassing them following the death of his other son, who was killed outside his school several years ago.
The protesters further alleged that during a recent visit to Batala to record their statements, they were assaulted following an altercation. Providing the department's perspective, SHO of Ghuman police station, Harjinder Singh, stated that the original incident dates back approximately five years and confirmed that the accused in that case have already been granted bail. The officer clarified that any decision regarding the cancellation of bail remains the prerogative of the court. He added that police were making continuous efforts to persuade the duo to safely descend from the tower. At the time of filing this report, the father and son remained atop the structure, with negotiations ongoing to bring the tense situation to a peaceful resolution.
