Chennai: A newly married woman who attempted to end her life over a quarrel with her husband by jumping into the sea off
Marina Beach was rescued by police personnel patrolling the sands.
Later, the woman’s husband was called to the Marina police station and allowed to take the woman home after giving an undertaking.
Police said P Gayathri, 20, a third-year computer science student of Queen Mary’s College, married her boyfriend P Ponnurangam on January 27 last year.
As Ponnurangam is employed at a private firm in Bengaluru the couple would meet every weekend. Gayathri stays at her sister Rajakumari’s house in Padi and continues her studies.
On Thursday evening, Ponnurangam came to the city and the couple went to the beach. A quarrel broke out between the two after Ponnurangam found unknown mobile numbers in her phone. In a fit of rage, Gayathri tried to commit suicide by jumping into the sea when police personnel patrolling the beach rescued her.
The police personnel took Gayathri to the Marina police station. Police informed Rajakumari who arrived at the station. Later, Gayathri was allowed to go home with Ponnurangam and Rajakumari.
Police commissioner Shankar Jiwal commended the personnel of the patrolling team for timely intervention and rescuing the woman.
