CHENNAI: Introducing good reading habits among inmates at Puzhal prison would help bring about a change in their attitude and character, prison director Ashutosh Shukla said.
To facilitate this, the prison department in coordination with Tamil Nool Veliyeedu Matrum Nool Virpanai Membaattu Kuzhumam, a trust supporting Tamil publishers and publishing, launched a threeday book fair on Wednesday for prisoners at Puzhal jail.
Inmates were allowed to visit the hall at prison-1 to select books.
Inaugurating the event, writer S Ramakrishnan spoke about the importance of reading, which he said would help them make the right decision at the right time. Prison- 2 superintendent K P Senthamaraikannan presided over the programme.
“Books ranging from fiction, non-fiction, literature, science and astrology are available. Prisoners can buy books at the fair using their prisoners cash property, which they accumulate by working while in prison,” said prison-1 superintendent V Rukmani Priyadarshini. Prison officials T Tamil Selvan and P Dharmaraj were also present at the inauguration.
The valedictory function will be held on Friday at 3pm.
