Sri Lankan court extends judicial custody of 35 Indian fishermen

MADURAI: A Sri Lankan court on Wednesday extended till Sept 11 the judicial custody of 35 Indian fishermen who were arrested on Aug 8 for fishing in the territorial waters of the island nation.

It was for the third time that their judicial custody was being extended.

Four country boats belonging to Alex, Ranjan, Charles and Susai Martin ventured into the sea from Pamban in Tamil Nadu and were detained by the Sri Lankan navy on Aug 8.

The fishermen were produced before a Puthalam court and were lodged in Wariyapola prison. As their remand period expired on Wednesday, they were produced before the court on Wednesday. The court extended their remand till Sept 11.
