'Sundar Pichai Tamil but Google AI Hub goes to Andhra Pradesh': AIADMK slams DMK; Udayakumar cites govt failure
NEW DELHI: AIADMK leader RB Udayakumar on Tuesday strongly criticised the DMK government, alleging that the party had failed to secure a major technological investment for Tamil Nadu despite its strong cultural ties to global tech leadership.
Speaking to the media, Udayakumar highlighted that, despite Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google, hailing from Nadu, the DMK had failed to invite Google to set up its AI infrastructure hub in the state.
“Despite Sundar Pichai being a Tamil, the DMK failed to invite Google to set up its AI infrastructure hub in Tamil Nadu,” Udayakumar said.
He further added that due to the state government’s inaction, the highly anticipated project was awarded to Andhra Pradesh instead.
“The project went to Andhra Pradesh instead,” Udayakumar added.
The AIADMK leader emphasised that the DMK government’s failure to leverage such opportunities not only deprives the state of potential investments but also impacts employment prospects and technological advancement in the region.
Last week, Google Cloud Global CEO Thomas Kurien announced plans to set up the company’s largest AI and data centre hub in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
In addition to the AI hub, Google Cloud intends to transform Visakhapatnam into a key global connectivity hub by landing its subsea cable infrastructure in the city. This infrastructure will be integrated into Google’s worldwide subsea network, positioning Visakhapatnam as a critical digital backbone for India. The project is expected to connect multiple regions and significantly enhance the country’s technological ecosystem.
Speaking during Google-Andhra Pradesh government MoU signing for mega data centre, CM Chandrababu Naidu stated, "It is a very auspicious and happy day for me and all of us. First of all, I have to thank honourable prime minister, he has made it possible. Our that our finance minister (Nirmala Sitharaman), she has done very well and our IT minister (Ashwini Vaishnaw) - when I mooted the idea, he was very positive. Google has to come to India and also (state) IT minister (Nara Lokesh), he also worked with you. I am a great admirer of Google. Your creativity and speed are very important. I brought Microsoft to Hyderabad, today, Google has come to Visakhapatnam, we are very happy. According to me, we are in inspiring time."
