NAMAKKAL: A labourer -- identified as M Subramani, 65, from Karnataka -- died after a truck fell into a 400-foot-deep granite quarry in Periyasoorampalayam in Namakkal district on Wednesday. Truck driver S Venugopal, 36, of Dharmapuri district suffered serious injuries.
The accident happened when the truck loaded with quarry dust was climbing a steep road from the quarry. While reaching the top of the quarry, the driver lost control of the vehicle. The truck fell into the quarry. "Subramani died on the spot, and Venugopal suffered serious injuries," said an officer at the Nallur police station. The injured driver was sent to a private hospital in Coimbatore.
Police registered a case and conducted investigations.
The quarry has been operated by Mayilvaganam and Murugesan of Salem for several years. Revenue department officials are investigating if stone is extracted only at the depth specified by the govt or if there are irregularities.
