ALMORA: After the Uttarakhand high court declared

Ganga and Yamuna

rivers as living entities, Bageshwar nagar palika is installing

CCTV cameras across the Saryu river

, a tributary of Ganga, to catch people throwing waste into the water body. Taking strict measures to curb pollution in the river, the local body has also decided to impose a fine of Rs 5,000 and file a police complaint against anyone throwing waste into the river.

Bageshwar is popularly known as Kashi of Kumaon where thousands of people take bath at the confluence of Gomti and Saryu rivers in front of

Bagnath temple

during the Uttarayani fair in January.

Earlier in January, the nagar palika had banned use of soaps while washing clothes in the river. The palika had also banned throwing of flowers or any sacred items used in the aarti at the Bagnath temple.

“In the first phase, CCTV cameras are being installed at eight places, including the Saryu bridge and ghats in Bageshwar,” Geeta Rawal, chairperson of the nagar palika, told TOI. “More cameras will be installed in the coming months,” Rawal said.

“Nagar palika staff will scan the CCTV footage every day from the control room at the office,” Rawal said.

“If anybody is found throwing waste into the river a police complaint will be fined against them. A fine of Rs 5,000 will be imposed on the offenders and they can be sent to jail as well,” added Rawal.
