Defending the action by the Punjab Police, AAP chief spokesperson Saurabh Bhardwaj said a case was lodged against Bagga after he tried to create communal tensions and incite violence in Punjab through his social media posts. “Bagga over the recent past has tried his best to spread hate and animosity in Punjab. Which is why the Punjab Police filed a case against him,” he said.

AAP MLA Atishi hit out at BJP, sharing the details of developments preceding Bagga’s arrest and how the BJP leader had failed to respond to five summons by the Punjab Police. She said BJP, through the Delhi Police which is under the Centre, is trying to protect Bagga and preventing the law to take its due course.

In a statement, AAP accused BJP of “abusing state machinery to prevent the arrest of a hate-monger”. "Delhi & Haryana Police's illegal action to prevent the arrest of Tajinder Bagga exposes BJP's real face. The Punjab Police has registered a case against Tajinder Bagga for inciting communal riots. Punjab Police summoned Tajinder Bagga five times following due procedure, but he refused to join the investigation,” Atishi said.

Bhardwaj said, "BJP falsely claims this to be vendetta politics because this is how they use state machinery to fulfil their evil goals. It is now a day-to-day thing for opposition leaders to get NIA, ED & Income Tax summons and raids."

Atishi said the Punjab Police followed due process to inform Delhi Police before the arrest, “but the Delhi Police illegally detained the Punjab Police personnel to protect a criminal belonging to BJP”.
