NEW DELHI: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has launched an initiative to support concessionaires running e-bike stands in north Delhi to hold guided tours under the Public Bicycle Sharing (PBS) and Shared Micro Mobility System (SMMS) policy.

The first tour on Sunday covered all seven gates of Shahjahanabad, from Kashmiri Gate to Delhi Gate, in a three-hour ride on e-bikes. People will only need to register on the app of the concessionaire to book bikes at nominal rates.

A senior MCD official said there are 49 e-bike stands in north Delhi and these can be operated by individual players after fulfilling the terms and conditions of the erstwhile north corporation. In comparison, the 65 e-bike stands in south Delhi are being operated by the concessionaire on a cluster basis.

“While a uniform policy for unified MCD is yet to be approved by the deliberative wing, we have decided to promote the eco-friendly mode of transport for tours to heritage sites. As a part of the initiative, we are supporting a concessionaire (Yulu Bikes Pvt Ltd) to hold the first guided tour on planned sites covering seven historical gates in Old Delhi,” said the official.

The tours will be organised over the weekends, and each tour will have 15-20 riders guided by a trained tour guide well-conversant in Hindi and English. The initiative will add to G20 preparedness to provide excellent transport logistics for the tourist circuit.

“It would be an opportunity to promote the rich heritage of the city on an environmentally-friendly medium of transport. Shahjahanabad was secured and enclosed by a 10km-long wall. The seven gates connected the city with the surrounding region, making the trip a unique experience,” said the official further.

“The e-bikes can be used via the dedicated ‘Yulu app’ at very nominal rates. We have planned two more guided tours covering other important places in Old Delhi. This will be followed by introducing a similar concept in south Delhi and finalising at least 3-4 e-tours that cover heritage sites,” said the official.
