"The background of the deceased was analyzed thoroughly to learn about his whereabouts and where he was seen last. From the modus operandi and inspection of the murder spot, it appeared to be the handiwork of someone who was familiar with the victim and had knowledge of the topography of the area,'' said DCP (northeast) Sanjay K Jain.
On the night Rajesh was murdered, he was last seen with Ravi, who had a bad reputation in the area. "Allegations of Rajesh's parents, circumstantial evidence and the condition of deceased at the crime scene led us to conclude that Ravi was behind the murder", he said.
"Initially, Ravi tried to mislead the police by giving different versions. But on sustained interrogation, he confessed to his involvement in the case. Rajesh had fallen into bad company, as a result of which he incurred a heavy debt which he was unable to repay. He was supposed to repay some amount to Ravi too but he defaulted in making the payment. This strained relations between the duo. On the fateful night of May 29, Rajesh approached Ravi to 'settle matters'. But they got into an argument which progressed into a verbal duel. An agitated Ravi shot Rajesh with the country made revolver. The victim died on the spot,'' said Jain.
