NEW DELHI:
Trinamool Congress leader on Friday criticized the conduct of a group that protested against
West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee at Oxford University's Kellogg College in London, claiming that the Students Federation of India in the UK (SFI UK) staged the demonstration merely for "publicity."
"I totally condemn this (behaviour by the students with Mamata Banerjee at the university where she was giving a speech). Oxford University is not Mamata's owns place, she went there on her own invitation. So what can we do it. It is for the university authority and England police to take steps in this matter. There is no reason they have done this except to get publicity. Mamata Banerjee is an elected Chief Minister of the state," Roy said.
The incident occurred when Banerjee encountered protests at Kellogg College on Thursday, where she faced questions about the RG Kar College incident and post-poll violence in West Bengal.
BJP's Amit Malviya shared footage claiming Bengali Hindu community members confronted Banerjee at the college.
"Bengali Hindus confront West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at Kellogg College in London, raising angry slogans calling her out for the rape and murder of the lady doctor at RG Kar, crimes against women in Sandeshkhali, the genocide of Hindus, and widespread corruption," he posted on X.
Malviya additionally labelled Banerjee as detrimental to West Bengal's reputation, noting that the Hindu Bengali diaspora desires her removal for damaging Bengal's heritage.
The footage showed interruptions during Banerjee's speech, with audience members questioning about Bengal's Hindu population. Banerjee responded, "I am for all, Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs and Christians," which prompted "Go back" chants from some attendees.
Addressing a protester, she stated, "Please remember this... and don't do politics. It's very easy to do politics here and create negative narratives."
The Trinamool Congress shared a video where Banerjee responded: "You encourage me, Please smile with a hope that Didi will come every time, Didi don't get bothered, Didi don't bother anybody, Didi walk just like a Royal Bengal Tiger and if you can catch me me."
The party commented: "She doesn't flinch. She doesn't falter. The more you heckle, the fiercer she roars. Mamata Banerjee is a Royal Bengal Tiger!"
SFI-UK claimed responsibility, stating they demonstrated against Banerjee's speech at Kellogg College, challenging her claims of social development.
They mentioned police intervention during their peaceful protest and affirmed their opposition to TMC's governance.
