GMC cleans its drains & gets ready with pumps

Ghaziabad: With pre-monsoon showers witnessed in the city on Thursday, the Ghaziabad municipal corporation (GMC) has identified 56 waterlogging vulnerable points and has started with the desilting of drains in these areas. Last year, the rainwater had entered the houses and slowed down traffic during monsoons.
Vikramaditya Singh Malik, municipal commissioner, said that pumps are being installed at vulnerable points to expedite the dewatering at affected areas. “A survey was carried out by GMC’s water works department, which has identified 56 waterlogging vulnerable points across five zones based on the past few years of monsoon experiences. For each zone, a team comprising an official from the water works department and the health department has been formed. This team will be directly responsible for any waterlogging-related issue,” Malik said.
The vulnerable points identified by the GMC include Hindon metro underpass, Meerut tri-section, Santosh medical college, Diamond flyover, Shastri Nagar H Block, and Sidharth Vihar along the NH9.
Gaushala Phatak, where water levels rise up to 12 feet every monsoon, has also been identified as vulnerable. A high-powered pump has been installed at the location to flush out water. Underpasses along the metro line are other vulnerable points. These include Rajendra Nagar and Arthala metro stations, Sahibabad underpass, Brij Vihar, Shopprix mall, and exit point of Hindon Elevated Road from the Delhi side.
Besides, craters and potholes have been removed from over 2,000km of roads to avoid water stagnation.
