BJP’s youth wing defeats ABVP in university polls

PANAJI: The panel backed by the BJP youth wing Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha swept the Goa

University

Students’ Council polls held on Monday on the campus. The winning panel gained 63 votes against the combined 22 votes of the rivals.


As clashes were witnessed among the students’ groups, the voting took place amidst heavy police deployment. A student member of the

claimed being assaulted by a glass bottle, but the police managed to defuse the situation.

Kemal Prabhu Shirodkar was elected the chairman of the Goa University Students’ Council.

“We are proud to say that BJYM backed panel has won the Goa University student elections for the tenth time. It is clear that students wanted to elect BJYM backed panel. We assure to address all the issues affecting students. The collaboration between ABVP and NSUI was clearly visible. But this coalition has been clearly rejected by the students,” Shirodkar said.

Gaurav Naik was elected as the general secretary, Shabani Shirodkar was chosen as the lady representative, while six other council members are Vishwas Rao Rane, Shubham Phaldesai, Karina Shirodkar, Rishikesh Salgaonkar, Rudra Ghodge, and Deeplav Lotlikar.

The BJYM members held a jubilant rally to mark their win and later met chief minister Pramod Sawant.

The university student’s council elections were earlier scheduled to be held on August 16, but were postponed following rivalry amongst the contesting panels. In an unusual turn of events, the BJYM was seen clashing with the panel backed by another BJP affiliate the Akhil Bharatiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP).

On Monday, the BJYM members claimed that the ABVP had joined hands with Congress’s student wing National Students Union of India (NSUI). The attack on BJYM members was carried out by this combine of ABVP and NSUI, the BJYM alleged.

NSUI’s official stand, however, was that it had declared beforehand it is boycotting the polls as its demand to hold direct elections were not complied with. The NSUI wanted the thousands of students of Goa University and its affiliated colleges to be given a direct vote to elect the university student’s council. At present, college students elect their representative, who then elect the faculty representatives, who choose the students’ council members.
