Untold story of Mohan Ranade finds voice at fest
Panaji: Mohan Ranade’s life was nothing short of a thriller film. At the 55th Iffi, the freedom fighter’s life story found a place on the big screen, with the Goan film ‘A silent sacrifice—the untold story of Goa Liberation’ by Nikhil Dixit.
Through a combination of historical footage, personal anecdotes, and expert analysis, the documentary offers a comprehensive look at Ranade’s contributions to Goa’s Liberation. Born in 1930 in Sangli, Maharashtra, a staunch nationalist, Ranade moved into a colonial territory on the day when India broke its shackles to become an independent nation.
‘A silent sacrifice—the untold story of Goa Liberation’ traces Ranade’s journey, from his early days to his relentless fight against Portuguese colonialism. In 1960, Ranade was sentenced to 26 years of imprisonment after a shoddy trial which pronounced its sentence in three days. He was deported to Portugal. But post-Liberation the Indian govt did not secure his freedom from the Portuguese prison, where he remained for 13 more years.
The director told TOI that it took around a year to complete the film. The film is produced by Waman Prabhu, a close associate of Mohan Ranade. “This project stands as more than a cinematic tribute—it aligns with the vision of Jeevanjyot Sanstha and our producer Waman Prabhu, advocating for the establishment of a memorial to honour Mohandada’s legacy.”
Highlighting the role of the producer in transforming the project into reality, he said, “Shrikant Kulkarni of Swami Vivekanand Jeevanjyot Sanstha, founded by Mohandada Ranade in Pune, envisioned creating a film and Waman Prabhu transformed the vision into a meaningful project.”
“Iffi offers a remarkable opportunity to share untold stories like Mohandada’s heroic saga with the world. His contributions to Goa’s freedom remain largely unrecognised and must be told,” he said.
