Tezpur litchi sweetens global markets with Dubai debut
Guwahati: The celebrated GI-tagged Tezpur litchi (Litchi chinensis), grown on the fertile alluvial soil and moist subtropical climate of Sonitpur district, has taken a giant leap into global markets.Renowned for its exceptional sweetness, juicy pulp, small seeds, tart-sweet flavour, and bright red colour, Tezpur litchi is one of Assam’s most prized horticultural products. The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), under the ministry of commerce & industry, facilitated the first export consignment of one metric tonne of Tezpur litchi to Dubai, marking a milestone for the northeast’s agricultural exports. Another 500 kg will be shipped to Singapore. In a symbolic gesture, 100 specially packaged boxes of premium Tezpur litchis will also be dispatched to the Prime Minister’s office.Commerce minister Piyush Goel hailed the initiative, noting: “With the support of @APEDADOC, the first export shipment of Tezpur Litchi has departed for Dubai. This step will give the region’s litchi global recognition, provide farmers with better prices, and create new opportunities for agricultural products from Northeast India.”
The GI status has strengthened the identity and market recognition of Tezpur litchi, enhancing its appeal among international buyers and opening new doors for premium exports. Officials said the move reflects the growing acceptance of India’s GI-tagged products in global markets and highlights the immense export potential of the northeast.Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma hailed the export to Dubai as a milestone showcasing the potential of the state’s farmers.“Our vision is clear — empower farmers, expand exports and take Assam’s finest products to the world. The export of 1,000 kg GI-tagged Tezpur litchi to Dubai showcases our farmers’ potential and the success of the Tezpur Litchi Festival,” Sarma said in a post on X.
