Charred body of youth found near canal, murder suspected

Ballari: Police have launched a murder probe after a 27-year-old diagnostic technician was found dead in a half-burnt condition near the LLC canal here, with investigators suspecting the body was set on fire to destroy evidence.

The victim, Basavanagouda, was a native of Bollanaguddam village in Andhra Pradesh’s Anantapur district. His family alleged that unidentified assailants killed him and transported the body nearly 13km away, before pouring petrol on it and setting it ablaze.

Police said rain is believed to have prevented the body from being completely burnt. The half-charred remains were spotted by staff working near the LLC canal, who alerted Moka police. Officers conducted a preliminary inspection and launched a search of the surrounding area.

Investigators later recovered Basavanagouda’s motorcycle and a pair of slippers about 13 km from the spot where the body was found, helping establish his identity.

Based on preliminary findings and clues collected from the scene, police suspect the case may be linked to a love affair, though they said the exact motive would be known only after a detailed investigation.

The victim’s father, Mohanagouda, said the family learnt about the incident on Monday afternoon after receiving a call from Basavanagouda’s uncle. He said his son had informed family members before leaving home and later called his sister to say he would have dinner outside, after which his phone was switched off.

A case has been registered at Moka police station and efforts are under way to identify and apprehend those responsible.
