HYDERABAD: In an effort to prevent the illegal transportation of alcohol into Telangana from various states like Delhi, Karnataka, Haryana and Goa, director general of police Anjani Kumar held an inter-departmental meeting on Saturday.
Senior officials from the police department, excise department, Railway police, intelligence agencies and others participated in the meeting.

Excise officials revealed that due to disparities in liquor prices across states, organised criminal groups are illegally importing alcohol from different states and selling it in state, resulting in a loss of revenue for the state government.
Since 2014, state police have filed 27,883 cases against individuals involved in the illegal smuggling of alcohol. Officials also invoked Preventive Detention (PD) Act against 15 repeat offenders.
Officials found that some tourists were also involved in acquiring liquor bottles from neighbouring states.
