400 teachers in Manipur threaten to go on strike if govt fails to meet demands

Imphal: The higher education sector in strife-torn Manipur is in a bad shape as 419 agitating lectures of six government aided colleges have threatened to launch strike from May 3 if the Okram Ibobi Singh government fails to comply with their demands that include making their jobs permanent.

The teachers have been demanding creation and absorption of their posts following Manipur University norms. They also demanded recruitment of non-teaching staff as per the state government rules.

The teachers of Standard College, Mayai Lambi College, Thambal Marik College, Liberal College, Birmangol College and Kakching Khunou College also demanded filling up of the sanctioned vacant posts of both teaching and non-teaching staff of the colleges.

They also sought implementation of the sixth pay of the UGC and recruitment of staff as per the UGC regulation, 2000. They also asked for a pension scheme for the employees of government-aided colleges.

As part of their programme, the teachers under the banner — All Manipur Government Aided College Teachers’ Association (AMGACTA) — had on April 11 wore black badges and took two days’ casual leave on April 21 and 22 .

“We have been staging a series of sit-ins at different colleges and on Friday we did it at Thambal Marik college,” the association’s secretary M Suren Singh told TOI on Friday.
