NEW DELHI: BJP leader Kirodi Lal Meena has resigned from the Rajasthan cabinet, his aide announced on Thursday.
This decision follows Meena's promise to step down if the BJP lost any of the seven parliamentary seats he was responsible for during the recent Lok Sabha polls.
As the party lost several seats, including Meena's native Dausa, he chose to honor his commitment.
"Kirodi Meena resigned as minister. He gave the resignation to the chief minister 10 days back," the aide confirmed. The Lok Sabha poll results were announced on June 4.
Kirodi Meena resigned from his ministerial position, submitting his resignation to the chief minister ten days ago, according to his aide.
Before making his resignation official, Meena expressed his firm commitment by quoting from the Ramcharitmanas on social media.
Meena actively campaigned in several constituencies in eastern Rajasthan, including Dausa, Bharatpur, Karauli-Dholpur, Alwar, Tonk-Sawai Madhopur, and Kota-Bundi. However, the results were disappointing, with the BJP losing seats in Dausa, Bharatpur, Karauli-Dholpur, and Tonk-Sawai Madhopur.
In a television interview, Meena confirmed his resignation and said that he skipped the recent cabinet meeting as a matter of principle since he had already resigned.
He mentioned that he had met the chief minister, who had respectfully declined to accept his resignation.
Meena explained that he had publicly announced he would resign if the party did not win the seats he worked on.
After the assembly elections last December, Meena was considered a potential candidate for the chief minister's position, but the party chose Bhajanlal Sharma, a first-time MLA.
Kirodi Meena has a long political career, having served as a five-time MLA, former Rajya Sabha MP and Lok Sabha MP for Dausa and Sawai Madhopur.
