The incident occurred in the early hours at Nekrakocha village under Rajnagar police station limits when a speeding overloaded pick-up van overturned after the driver lost control, police said.

“The 40 passengers, mostly labourers engaged in construction work, hail from different areas of Chaibasa in West Singbhum district. They were travelling to Rajnagar for roof casting job. The deceased, who were in their 30s, include a woman,” Rajnagar police station in-charge Chandan Kumar said.

Another official said the injured were rushed to the Rajnagar block hospital, from where those serious were shifted to the government-run Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital (MGMMCH) in Jamshedpur in East Singbhum district. The death toll may increase as at least eight of the injured are critical.

Following the accident, chief minister Hemant Soren offered his condolences. “May God grant peace to the departed souls and give strength to the bereaved family members to bear the loss,” he tweeted.
