NIT partners with SME sector for funds to set up incubation centre

JAMSHEDPUR: The National Institute of Technology (NIT-Jamshedpur) has tied up with entrepreneurs of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) of Kolhan division to seek fund support for setting up state-of-the-art incubation centre at the institute.

NIT Director, Goutam Sutradhar said that leading engineering company, RSB group, Chairman, R K Behera is the first to have committed to provide funds support for the same. The incubation center will host high-end technology driven machines that are generally not obtained by small entrepreneurs.

The SME representatives, with whom the director had a meeting on Wednesday, have suggested the institute to install electron microscope scanner of above 1000x capacity, micro hardness tester, surface defect tester, and reverse prototype 3D scanner machines, among others, in the first phase.

The director said that the incubation centre will have the desired machines in a phased manner, with aforementioned high quality tech machines to be procured in the first phase.

Head of department, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, NIT, Ranjit Prasad, said as per the New Education Policy (NE), one semester in the undergraduate course is dedicated to industrial exposure and the student have to do an industrial internship.

He said, "The objective behind the incubation centre is to bring the engineering minds and the industry on one platform, and, aid the entrepreneurs in developing new and better products."

The industry representatives said that they are keen on extending support to the NIT, as they believe collaborative approach will help both the partners achieve their goals.

"About 30 entrepreneurs, who attended the meeting, have appreciated the institute for coming forward with the incubation centre initiative that serves the interest of both the partners," NIT spokesperson Sunil Kumar Bhagat said.
