JAMSHEDPUR: Jamshedpur, also known as Steel City, provides a strong skeletal infrastructure for the state and the country but its residents are yet to catch up on art despite exhibitions on artistic works are an integral part of the city.
Artists in Jamshedpur, where India’s first steel plant came up and is still one of the largest in the world, rued that they could only exhibit their work regularly for awareness and held no hope that their creations would any find takers.
Nevertheless, the city is hosting two exhibitions-cum-camps currently, one titled Art in Industry, organised by
Tata Steel at the Centre for Excellence, and the other on the Ganesha theme — Siddhivinayak exhibition — organised by Studio Invincible at the National Bose Art Gallery in Sakchi.
According to Anupam Pal, who is a contemporary figurative painter, he sold around 40 paintings in 2022 but none of them are from Jamshedpur. This year, too, he has sold 23 paintings, so far, and only one buyer was from Steel City.
In the same vein, artist Sangeeta Kishore, whose paintings are primarily inspired by the Buddha, said she has also sold a couple of paintings this year but none of the buyers were from Jamshedpur.
The artists in Steel City said despite the rising number of art exhibitions over the years, art is still a hobby and not a serious career option here. There are about 35 professional artists in the city whose paintings are worth in the range of Rs 10,000 to Rs 10 lakh.
