JAMSHEDPUR: Chami Murmu, who is known as the Lady Tarzan of Jharkhand for her fight against the timber mafia, has been awarded the
Padma Shri by the Union government in recognition of her initiatives for women's empowerment and to conserve the environment.
A resident of Rajnagar block of Seraikela-Kharsawan district, Chami (52) is credited with planting 30 lakh saplings with the support of 3,000 women of Seraikela.
The activist is also known for her crusade against the Maoists, saying they have been misguiding ignorant boys from poor families in villages.
