Chain snatcher, jeweller held for targeting an elderly woman in Kanpur

Kanpur: The Bithoor police on Monday arrested two persons, a chain snatcher, who had targeted an elderly woman in Singhpur on April 7 and a jeweller who purchased the stolen item. The police identified the thief as Saurabh Gautam, a resident of Vinayakpur Rawatpur, while the jeweller was named as Raj Verma from Om Purwa Jajmau.
According to reports, the victim, Rajrani from Pioneer City in the Singhpur area, was enroute to collect her granddaughter from school on the afternoon of April 7. On the way, a motorcyclist snatched her chain and escaped. Following the elderly woman's complaint, the police filed a report and analysed local CCTV recordings, which helped them trace Saurabh.
The police detained him near a private school on Bithoor Road and recovered a pistol and live cartridges from his possession. During questioning, Saurabh revealed that he sold the stolen chain to jeweller Raj Verma, who during interrogation acknowledged that he melted the chain and subsequently sold it. tnn
