Two robbers arrested after police encounter in Bharthana, looted cash and weapons recovered
Kanpur: Two robbers were arrested after an encounter with police in the Bharthana police station area in Etawah district on Monday night. One of them was identified as Vishwanath, accused in 17 cases. Police recovered looted cash of Rs 53,700 and illegal weapons from them. Both were sent to jail.
Police said the encounter took place when a team led by police station inspector in-charge Vikram Singh was checking suspicious vehicles near Ghasara Tiraha on Monday night. During the checking, two youths on a bike were seen approaching. When police signalled them to stop, the two allegedly sped away and opened indiscriminate fire on the police team with the intent to kill.
Police said they surrounded the two and retaliated. During the exchange of fire, Vishwanath was shot in the right leg and fell. Police then arrested him and his associate, Ritik Kumar. Vishwanath was admitted to the district hospital for treatment.
During interrogation, police said, the two admitted they had carried out a snatching incident with a grocery trader on April 27.
Police said they recovered Rs 53,700 in looted cash, two country-made pistols, a large quantity of cartridges and the bike used in the incident from the accused.
Vishwanath had 17 cases of robbery and theft registered against him, while Ritik Kumar had five cases registered against him. A case was registered against them under various sections of BNS and the Arms Act at the Bharthana police station, and they were sent to jail.
SSP Etawah Brijesh Kumar Shrivastava said, “The zero tolerance policy against criminals will continue. The injured criminal is being treated and the other contacts of their gang are being investigated.”
