Kochi: The motor vehicles department (MVD) booked 20 auto rickshaws in the city on Friday during an inspection conducted prior to the Onam festive season.
Many of the autos booked did not possess mandatory documents, including insurance papers, tax certificates, permit documents or licence. The inspection also found that an auto stand functioning near the Medical Trust hospital was illegal and had no permit from the road safety authority, which is mandatory.
The department also booked an auto driver for drunken driving.
"Since Onam is nearing, the number of people commuting to city has increased. If no proper inspections are carried out, it will result in malpractices, including charging exorbitant rates and harassment of commuters," said Suresh M, Regional Transport Officer (Enforcement).
He said most of the visitors might not have clear idea of routes and destinations in Kochi which increases chances for exploitation.
The team noticed that many auto stands functioning in and around the city are unscientific and do not have permits from the road safety authority.
"According to a high court directive, an auto stand is permitted only if it is 1.5 metre away from road margin," said Suresh.
Many autos, plying in the city, did not have city permits.
The department warned of intensified drive among autos in the city on coming days.
