4 dead, 2 critical after formalin mix-up

Four men died and two turned critically ill after they drank mistaking it to be water. The group was drinking alcohol at a poultry farm in Baruipur when the incident happened around 9pm on Tuesday.

Kolkata: Four men died and two turned critically ill after they drank mistaking it to be water. The group was drinking alcohol at a poultry farm in Baruipur when the incident happened around 9pm on Tuesday. The deceased have been identified as Ashok Mondal, Saheb Haldar, Rajat Haldar and Munim Yadav — all aged between 30 and 44. Critically ill Giridhari Yadav and Jahangir Gazi have been admitted to Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital. The hospital gave them a stomach wash and were trying to stabilise them when last reports came in. Ashok was a sweet-shop owner and Saheb, Rajat, Giridhari and Munim were his staffers. Jahangir worked at the poultry farm.Baruipur police sent to liquor bottles and the formalin bottle for chemical examination. Cops also questioned the owner of the poultry farm, Rathin Gayen, and other residents of the area. SP of Baruipur police district Vaibhav Tiwari said Gayen was being interrogated as the incident happened in his poultry farm.
