50 years later, Sonar Kella comes to life in Bengal’s first-ever Feluda flipbook

KOLKATA: Half a century after Satyajit Ray’s Sonar Kella (The Golden Fortress) immortalised the desert landscapes of Rajasthan and cemented the legendary sleuth Feluda in the Bengali psyche, a unique literary tribute has taken the city's Feluda lovers by storm.

In a first-of-its-kind initiative in Bengal, Bhasha Publishing has launched "Sonar Kella 2-in-1", a novelty flipbook-cum-factbook that condenses the magic of the entire cinematic masterpiece into a manual, physical animation, while offering a treasure trove of rare trivia on its flip side.

The book was officially released recently at the Read Bengali Bookstore by veteran actor Siddhartha Chatterjee, celebrated by generations of fans as Ray's very first on-screen 'Topshe'. Joining him to discuss Satyajit Ray’s sprawling literary and artistic universe were renowned artists Debasish Deb and Riddhi Goswami.

The inspiration behind this unique layout comes directly from the Feluda universe itself. In the 1979 film Joi Baba Felunath, Feluda is seen meticulously flipping through an exquisite, hand-drawn flipbook in the room of the young character, Ruku’s grandfather.

"I got the idea from the movie only," said Agniva Chakraborty, a dedicated Feluda aficionado who compiled and edited the volume. "I then collaborated with Shubham Bhattacharya, an artist and illustrator. Together we managed to bring it to life, and people loved it."

Bhattacharya, widely known for his artistic venture Bhattababur Page, meticulously designed the cover, interior illustrations, and the core animation mechanics of the flipbook. Instead of clicking a play button on a screen, readers can now watch the iconic movie unfold through a swift, rhythmic flip of their fingers.

For bibliophiles and cinephiles alike, the real magic begins when the book is turned upside down. The reverse side acts as a comprehensive Sonar Kella Factbook, shedding light on production secrets and lesser-known historical trivia surrounding Ray's 1974 masterpiece.

Beyond text-based trivia, the publication serves as a visual archive. Marking 50 years since the movie's release, the pages feature vibrant, contemporary color photographs of the original shooting locations across Rajasthan, tracking how the forts and railway stations look today.
For the ultimate Feluda purist, the book also reproduces a detailed bibliography of the titles sitting on Feluda’s personal bookshelf, complete with their original cover designs.

Exclusive Collectibles Included: To capture the tactile spirit of the film, every copy of the book comes bundled with premium replicas of the original visiting cards of Feluda and Dr. Hajra—faithfully recreated using Satyajit Ray’s original typography and design.
