LUCKNOW: District prison jailor and head warden deputed to guard the barrack were suspended following the death of an undertrial. A 57-year-old farmer Nankau was found hanging from the iron grill inside his cell on Sunday morning.
Nankau had sought neurological treatment in the past and also spent about two years at a mental asylum in Varanasi. Inquiries were conducted in the matter to fix responsibilities.
ADG jail Devendra Singh Chauhan said the two were suspended late on Sunday.
“The jail staff will check barracks under them on a regular basis to stop any untoward activity,” said Chauhan. Head warden Prasiddh Narayan Singh was on duty when the incident took place. Apart from him, jailor Dinesh Chandra Mishra was also suspended. Jail superintendent Dadhiram Maurya was on leave on Sunday.
A jail staff member said the staff remains overburdened as posts sanctioned have not been filled. At present two jailors look after the jail that houses close to 3,300 convicts and undertrials. “The government has sanctioned six posts of jailor for Lucknow. Moreover just six deputy jailors are posted while sanctioned posts are 21,” said the staff member.
