LU proposes industry-focused overhaul of engineering curriculum

Lucknow: Lucknow University has proposed reforms in engineering education on its second campus to align the curriculum with industry requirements and emerging technologies. A Curriculum Review Committee has been formed to update the syllabus and improve employability skills, officials said.As part of the changes, a common first semester for all engineering branches has been proposed, along with an early branch change option in the second semester instead of the third. The university also plans to reduce internal assessment pressure by replacing two mid-term exams with a single mid-term examination.Continuous lab evaluation throughout the semester has been suggested to remove the need for separate external practical exams. This is expected to increase focus on practical learning and student engagement.A flexible eighth semester has also been introduced in the proposal, allowing students to opt for six-month industrial training in reputed companies, research institutions and approved organisations, subject to eligibility criteria including stipend or package standards.Vice-chancellor Prof JP Saini said, “The engineering faculty will implement industry-oriented updates to its syllabus to improve student skills and job readiness. The reforms aim to make engineering education more modern, flexible and aligned with global standards.”
